10 Tips for Layering Necklaces Like a Pro

I can’t remember the last time I wore just a single necklace. I am so grateful that I live in a time where layering necklaces and chains is a trend!! Layering necklaces is an art that can elevate any outfit, adding depth, dimension, and personality to your style. Whether you’re going for a minimalistic vibe or a bold statement, these tips will help you master the technique of layering necklaces like a pro.

1. Start with a Focal Point

Choose one necklace to serve as the centerpiece of your look. This could be a pendant, a charm necklace, or a bold statement piece. Build the rest of your layers around this focal point to create a cohesive look. Think big gemstone or gold piece, something that draws the eye to that necklace as your starting point.

2. Play with Different Lengths

The key to layering is varying the lengths of your necklaces. Mix chokers, mid-length pieces, and long necklaces to create a cascading effect that draws the eye. Aim for at least three different lengths to achieve balance and harmony. Avoid necklaces of the same length as they can hang over the top of one and other.

3. Mix Textures and Styles

Combine different chain styles, such as delicate chains, chunky links, and beaded necklaces, to add texture and dimension. By using different chain styles, it can help with them tangling on each other as well! (Don’t ask me why, but it works!) Don’t be afraid to mix modern and vintage pieces or blend metals for a unique look.

4. Choose a Color Palette

To keep your layers cohesive, stick to a specific color palette. For example, you can go all gold, all silver, or mix metals for a contemporary look. You can also add a pop of color with gemstone or enamel accents.

5. Layer Odd Numbers

Odd numbers tend to look more visually appealing. Aim to layer three, five, or seven necklaces for a dynamic and stylish effect. If you’re new to layering, start with three pieces and build from there. Be confident about the number you throw on too! Don’t let your confidence get in the way of looking fab!

6. Balance Proportions

Consider the size and weight of each necklace. Pair chunky chains with dainty pieces to create contrast. Avoid layering too many heavy necklaces together, as it can overwhelm your outfit and feel uncomfortable.

7. Add a Personal Touch

Incorporate meaningful pieces, like a locket, initial pendant, or birthstone necklace, to make your layers feel special and unique. Personal touches can also be great conversation starters. Charms are in right now!! Add different pendants and charms to your pieces (it’s okay if they fall on top of one and other!)

8. Mind the Neckline

Your outfit’s neckline plays a crucial role in necklace layering. Low necklines, like v-necks and scoop necks, provide ample space for multiple layers. Avoid a length that falls right at the neckline as it can get lost behind the fabric. Turtlenecks and high collars pair well with longer chains.

9. Use Spacers and Extenders

To prevent your necklaces from tangling, use spacers or adjustable extenders. These small additions help maintain proper spacing between your layers and keep them from bunching together. Here’s a link to a few spacers/adjustable extenders we have in store!
